Fostering social-ecological resilience to preserve biocultural diversity in rural Spain (BioDIV)

Rural regions, and especially their agroecosystems, are visibly shaped by human practices, and in these areas the relationship between nature and culture runs deep, where everyday practices and traditions have co-evolved with the environment over millennia. BioDIV will explore how biodiversity and culture is connected and where it can be found.

Three main objectives are defined:

1. Literature review of biocultural diversity practices in the Mediterranean

  • Where and why can be found biocultural diversity practices?

  • Are there specific indicators for assessing biocultural diversity?

  • Which are those indicators?

Methods:

Systematic review of the scientific literature on biocultural diversity, practices and indicators.

2. Mapping biocultural diversity hotspots

3. In-depth evaluation of biocultural diversity and its social-ecological roots

  • Where are place biocultural diversity? Are there variables determining the provision of biocultural diversity?

  • How and why?

  • What are the socio-ecological roots of biocultural diversity?

  • What type of local ecological knowledge determines biocultural diversity?

Spatial and statistical assessment of information for mappimg biocultural diversity in key case studies.

Socio-cultural approaches for assessing and valuing biocultural diversity in specific case studies.
